The spiritual motherhood of Mary: mother of all the faithful

The spiritual motherhood of Mary, mother of all the faithful
The spiritual motherhood of Mary designates Mary’s role as Mother of all Christians, not of Jesus alone. Its central biblical foundation lies at Calvary: “Woman, behold your son. Behold your Mother” (Jn 19:26-27). For an in-depth article: The Spiritual Motherhood of Mary.
Biblical foundation
On the Cross Jesus entrusts the “beloved disciple” to Mary and Mary to the disciple. Catholic exegesis reads in this gesture the constitution of a universal motherhood: the beloved disciple represents all the disciples of Christ. Mary thus becomes Mother not only of Jesus, but of all who receive Jesus as Lord and Master.
Theological development
The spiritual motherhood was developed by patristic and medieval theology. Saint Anselm, Saint Bernard, and Saint Bonaventure contributed to its elaboration. The modern Magisterium, in particular the Second Vatican Council (LG 61) and John Paul II (Redemptoris Mater), confirmed and deepened this doctrine.
Spiritual implications
If Mary is the mother of all Christians, they are called to live a filial relationship with her: to entrust their concerns to her, to imitate her virtues, to let themselves be led by her to Christ. Consecration to Our Lady is the most explicit expression of this filial relationship.
