Marian icons of Ukraine: a spiritual and cultural treasure of the Ukrainian Eastern Christian tradition.

Marian Icons of Ukraine: Introduction

The Marian icons of Ukraine constitute one of the richest heritages of Eastern Mariology. The tradition of the Marian icons of Ukraine goes back to the baptism of Kyivan Rus (988) and developed over a thousand years, giving rise to a spirituality of its own, marked by contemplation of the mystery of Mary, Mother of God.

I. Origin of the Marian Icons of Ukraine

The origin of the Marian icons of Ukraine lies in the transmission of Byzantine iconography to the Church of Kyiv. The first Marian icons of Ukraine were brought from Constantinople and copied in Ukrainian monasteries. The icon of the Mother of God of Vyshhorod (12th century), for example, was venerated in Kyiv before being taken to Vladimir.

II. The Principal Marian Icons of Ukraine

Among the principal Marian icons of Ukraine, the following stand out: the Mother of God of Pochaiv, patroness of the monastery of the Pochaiv Lavra; the Mother of God of Zarvanytsia, an important Greek Catholic pilgrimage center; the Mother of God of Berdychiv; the Mother of God of Kholm; and the Mother of God of Hrushevo. Each of these Marian icons of Ukraine has a history of manifestations and miracles.

III. The Mother of God of Pochaiv

The icon of the Mother of God of Pochaiv is perhaps the most celebrated of the Marian icons of Ukraine. Kept in the Pochaiv Lavra (16th century), it became a focus of Orthodox and Greek Catholic pilgrimage. It defended the region against Turkish invasions in the 17th century and remains, today, a spiritual point of reference among the Marian icons of Ukraine.

IV. The Mother of God of Zarvanytsia

The shrine of Zarvanytsia, in Galicia, is the principal Marian center of Ukrainian Greek Catholics. Its icon, dated to the 13th century, is venerated as a sign of unity and liberation. Among the Marian icons of Ukraine, that of Zarvanytsia is the one most closely associated with Christian national identity.

V. The Spiritual Significance of the Marian Icons of Ukraine

The Marian icons of Ukraine are not merely objects of art: they are “windows onto heaven,” theological presences. The Byzantine theology of the icon, formulated at the Second Council of Nicaea (787), applies fully to the Marian icons of Ukraine. Explore this further in John Paul II’s Orientale Lumen.
