Presentation of Jesus in the Temple: Mary and Simeon

Apresentação de Jesus no templo: Maria e Simeão

## The Presentation of Jesus (Luke 2:22-38)

One of the richest episodes from Jesus’ childhood for Mariology is the **Presentation of Jesus in the Temple**, where Mary and Joseph fulfill the law of Moses and encounter two prophets—Simeon and Anna—who recognize Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah.

### Simeon’s Nunc Dimittis and Prophecy

Simeon, moved by the Holy Spirit, takes Jesus in his arms and sings the *Nunc Dimittis*: “Lord, now you are letting your servant go in peace.” He then addresses Mary with a prophecy that is both joyful and sorrowful: *”A sword will pierce through your heart”* (Luke 2:35). This prophecy is the origin of the devotion to the **Sorrows of Mary**.

## Mary as Offerer

Theological tradition has seen in the Presentation a prefiguration of the sacrifice on Calvary: Mary offers her Son to the Father in an attitude that foreshadows her consent to His Passion. This parallel between the Temple and Golgotha illuminates Mary’s role as **Co-Redemptrix**.

## The Feast of Candlemas

The Presentation of Jesus is celebrated on February 2nd (forty days after Christmas), with the blessing of candles, hence the popular name *Candlemas*. The candle symbolizes Christ, the light of nations, as Simeon sang. It is also the day dedicated to Consecrated Life, chosen by Pope John Paul II to celebrate those who present themselves to the Lord in a similar way as Jesus was presented in the Temple.
