# The Encyclical *Superiore Anno* (August 30, 1884)The second rosary encyclical of Pope Leo XIII and the first to systematically develop the theology of the Rosary as a “*compendium of the Gospel*” is *Superiore Anno*. The pope presents the Rosary as the prayer that most perfectly summarizes Christ’s life contemplated through Mary’s eyes.## Collection:

Rosary as a compendium of the Gospel, prayer for social peace# The Rosary as a Compendium of the GospelLeo XIII develops a theology of the Rosary that will be taken up by John Paul II in *Rosarium Virginis Mariae* (2002): the Rosary is not merely repetition of “Hail Marys” but *contemplation of the mysteries* of Christ’s life:> *”…the Rosary, which we call, is a prayer composed of praise and petition: of praise for the Virgin Mary, whom we recall three times in a decade with the Angelic Salutation; of petition, by which we repeatedly ask for God’s mercy through the Virgin Mary. And all this is united with meditation on the mysteries of faith…”*# The Rosary for Social PeaceIn a context of grave social unrest (the Social Question was at its peak; *Rerum Novarum* would be released seven years later, in 1891), Leo XIII presents the Rosary as an instrument of peace not only spiritual but also social. Peace between classes, nations, and within families comes from peace with God, and the Rosary is the gentlest path to that peace.# The Ten Numbers of the Encyclical (nn. 342-351)The ten numbers covered in *Doctrina Pontificia IV* develop:– The historical effectiveness of the Rosary (Lepanto, 1571)
– The three groups of mysteries as a Christian life itinerary: joy (Incarnation), sorrow (Redemption), and glory (Escatology)
– Mary as “*guide*” to contemplation of Christ’s mysteries
– The Rosary in family as an antidote to domestic secularism
– The plenary indulgence for members of the Rosary Confraternity annually# Complementary ReadingExplore Mariology, *Rosarium Virginis Mariae* (John Paul II, 2002), *Marialis Cultus* (Paul VI, 1974), and the general post on *Leo XIII and the Thirteen Encyclicals on the Rosary*.
