**Documents Analyzed** | **Christus Dominus** | **Apostolicam Actuositatem** | **Ad Gentes** | **Optatam Totius** | **Perfectae Caritatis** | **Presbyterorum Ordinis**

## Christus Dominus 12: Mary and the Bishops

> **Excerpt:** *”Episcopi… Beatissimam Virginem Mariam, in qua eorum christianum recte gerere et veram Christi imaginem ostendere debent, sequi debent ut modello et magistra”*.

Bishops are called to follow the Blessed Virgin Mary as a model and teacher in fulfilling their triple office (teach, sanctify, govern). This perspective is novel in conciliar teaching.

## Apostolicam Actuositatem 4: Mary in the Laity

> **Excerpt:** *”Maria Virgo, regina apostolorum, pio cordis affectu apostolatum laicorum tueatur… ut sicut ipsa cum apostolis perdita perfecit, ita nunc ipsa cum laicis christianis conveniat in Cenaculo…”*

The Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity concludes with an extensive Marian section that echoes *Christifideles Laici*: The Virgin Mary, Queen of the Apostles, with a pious heart, sustains the apostolate of the laity, making them worthy of many honors. Just as she completed her work with the apostles, so now she gathers with Christian laics in the Cenacle, descending the Holy Spirit.

The Decree on the Activity of the Church in the Mission field includes a Marian reference in its concluding chapter: The conciliar fathers, along with all bishops brothers in faith, who at the pinnacle of intercession for the salvation of the world… turn to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of the Apostles, to protect and promote all missions throughout the earth.

## Optatam Totius 8: Mary in Priestly Formation

> **Text:** *”Seminaria et scholae, quae ad formationem sacerdotum destinata sunt, eam (Mariam) in primis colere debent…”*

The Decree on Priestly Formation contains the most influential text from Vatican II regarding seminaries and Marian formation for future priests.

**Quote:**

> “With great confidence, let the Church entrust itself to the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of good counsel and spiritual life for priests, following the ancient Fathers who were guided under her singular motherly gaze.” (OT 8)

**Expanding the Quote:**

This passage was further developed in *Pastores Dabo Vobis* (1992), where John Paul II elaborated on what the Council only hinted at.

**Perfectae Caritatis n. 25 – Mary in Religious Life:**

The Decree on the Renewal of Religious Life concludes with a Marian section that establishes the tradition of Marian religious orders:

> “Religious men and women turn to the Most Blessed Virgin, Mother of Christ and of the Church, so that she may be their guide, example, and helper on the path to perfect charity.” (PC 25)

**Presbyterorum Ordinis n. 18 – Mary and Priests:**

The Decree on the Ministry and Life of Priests ends with a Marian section that provides biblical and traditional foundations for priests’ Marian devotion:

> “Let the Church implore the protection of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Christ, Eternal Priest, Queen of Apostles, and let her cult be cultivated with tenderness and filial piety.” (PO 18)

**Synthesis: Vatican II’s Pastoral Mariology:**

These six documents, along with the four major Marian documents of the Council (*Lumen Gentium* Chapter VIII, *Sacrosanctum Concilium*, *Dei Verbum*, *Gaudium et Spes*), complete the Council’s mariology. They demonstrate that Mary was not only addressed in *Lumen Gentium* Chapter VIII as a dogmatic issue but also as a living pastoral presence in all aspects of Church life: from bishops to laity, missionaries to religious, priests to seminaries.
