The Celebration of Grace: The Presentation of Mary in the Temple

A celebração da graça: a Apresentação de Maria no templo

The spiritual journey of the Virgin Mary begins with an event of profound significance, celebrated in the Christian liturgy as the Presentation of Mary in the Temple. This celebration, though rooted not in history but in the narrative tradition of the Protoevangelium of James, carries a profound spiritual symbolism. In it, we are told that Mary, as a little girl only three years old, is brought by her parents to the Temple, giving herself over to the service of God.

Presentation of Mary in the Temple, a celebration of divine grace

The Evolution of the Celebration of Mary in the Temple

This celebration first arose in honor of the Church of Saint Mary the New, built in Jerusalem. Over the centuries, the feast crossed borders, from the grandeur of Byzantium to the heart of Western Europe, and its celebration was formalized by Sixtus V. This liturgical event, despite its initial uncertainties, won a special place in the hearts of the faithful and in the new arrangement of the Liturgy of the Hours.

Mary: The Sanctuary of the Holy Spirit

The theological core of this celebration centers on the figure of Mary as the “Kekaritomene”, the fullness of divine grace. Her life is seen as a continuous and faithful response to her divine election. This recognition of Mary’s holiness suggests that her presence in the Temple was crucial for preserving and cultivating this exceptional holiness. The presentation of the one who is Immaculate would make great sense in her spiritual journey.

The liturgy of the memorial reflects this holiness, though in cautious language that avoids subjective interpretations. The antiphon for the Magnificat at Vespers echoes this sentiment: “Holy Mary, Mother of God, glorious Virgin, temple of the Lord, sanctuary of the Holy Spirit”!

The Temple: A Place of Growth and Revelation for Mary

The image of the temple, beyond the narrative of the Protoevangelium of James, situates God’s action in Mary’s life within a specific historical context. For the people of Israel, the Temple was more than a meeting place. It was a place of God’s presence, where Mary lived and matured spiritually, in anticipation of her mission as Mother of the Lord.

The Liturgy: An Echo of Divine Wisdom in Honor of Mary

In the liturgy of this day, a hymn stands out that celebrates the divine gifts bestowed on Mary. She is extolled as the immortal Wisdom, the Gate of the East, and the new Burning Bush, a tapestry of images that reflect her uniqueness and her crucial role in the history of salvation.

The Call to Imitate Mary

What is celebrated in Mary is also a call to all the faithful. As Saint Paul teaches, we are all temples of the Holy Spirit. Likewise, the image of Mary as mother, highlighted in the Gospels, symbolizes obedience to the divine will, a virtue within reach of all the faithful. Saint Augustine reinforces this idea, reminding us that, although Mary is an exalted member of the Church, we all share in this dignity as members of the Body of Christ.

Divine Grace Through Mary

Finally, the Collect of this memorial reminds us that, in celebrating Mary, we seek to merit, through her intercession, the fullness of divine grace. This celebration, therefore, is not merely a remembrance of Mary’s story, but an invitation to experience and grow in the grace that she exemplified in her life and mission.

Holy Mary, Virgin of the Presentation, pray for us!

Devotion to the Presentation of Mary in the Temple is grounded in the Marian Magisterium of the Church, especially in the apostolic exhortation Marialis Cultus (Paul VI), which guides Marian piety and the liturgical celebration in honor of the Virgin Mary.
