Annunciation: The moment of “Let it be”

Anunciação: o momento do Fiat
# Annunciation: The Moment of FiatThe **Annunciation** (Luke 1:26-38) is the foundational moment in all Mariology: the Angel Gabriel goes to Nazareth and greets Mary as “full of grace,” announces that she will conceive the Son of the Most High, and Mary responds with the **Fiat**: “Let it be done to me according to your word.”## The Angel’s Greeting“Hail, full of grace” (Kecharitomene in Greek) is a unique verbal form in the New Testament, signifying that Mary was perfectly and permanently blessed. The Catholic Church sees this as the biblical foundation for the doctrine of the **Immaculate Conception**: Mary was “full of grace” from the first moment of her existence.## Mary’s Dialogue with the AngelMary does not passively accept the announcement; she questions, seeks clarification (“How can this be, since I do not know a man?”), and only after the angel explains the role of the Holy Spirit does she give her consent. This dialogue reveals Mary’s faith as mature and responsible, not naive.## Soteriological MeaningIn his encyclical *Redemptoris Mater*, Pope John Paul II emphasized that Mary’s **Fiat** is the response humanity has been waiting for. With her “yes,” Mary represents Israel and all humanity embracing the salvation offered by God. The Annunciation marks the beginning of new creation.**Deepen your studies:** Explore Mariology, Marian Theology, Marian Apparitions, and a Master’s in Mariology.—## Church Teaching> **”Ave, plena gratia. Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus.”** (Luke 1:28 – Vulgata Clementina)**Translation:** Hail, full of grace. The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women.> *”This Mother of God was necessarily to be born, unless from the very beginning she were free from all original sin.”* (St. Pius X, Enc. *Ad Diem Illum Laetissimum*, February 2, 1904)📚 **Literal Translation:** That which was to be the Mother of God (Mãe de Deus) necessarily had to be one that, from the very beginning, was purified of all stain of original sin.
