Vatican Council II and Mary: Chapter VIII of Lumen Gentium

# Vatican Council II and Mary: Chapter VIII of Lumen Gentium
The Second Vatican Council made a historic decision regarding Mary, integrating the Marian doctrine into Chapter VIII of the dogmatic constitution *Lumen Gentium* (1964) on the Church, instead of issuing a separate constitution. This choice had profound theological implications. For a comprehensive article: /concilio-vaticano-ii-maria/
## The Great Conciliar Debate
In October 1963, the Council fathers voted by a narrow margin of 1,114 to 1,074 to include the schema on Mary in the schema on the Church. This slim victory revealed a tension between two models: *Mariology ecclesiological* (Mary at the heart of the Church) and *Mariology christological* (Mary’s unique proximity to Christ). The Council opted for the former without excluding the latter.
## Contributions of Chapter VIII
Chapter VIII (nn. 52-69) of *Lumen Gentium* presented:
1. Mary in the mystery of Christ and the Church.
2. Her role in the economy of salvation.
3. Her relationship to the Church.
4. The cult of Mary in the Church.
5. Guidelines for authentic Marian devotion. It was a document of great theological balance.
## Post-Conciliar Renewal
Following the Council, Pope Paul VI issued the Exhortation *Marialis Cultus* (1974), deepening the conciliar guidelines on Marian devotion. John Paul II, with his Encyclical *Redemptoris Mater* (1987), gave a decisive impetus to post-conciliar Mariology, integrating biblical, patristic, and spiritual perspectives into a coherent whole.
