The Second Vatican Council and Mary: chapter VIII of Lumen gentium

Concílio Vaticano II e Maria: o capítulo VIII da Lumen gentium

The Second Vatican Council and Mary, chapter VIII of Lumen Gentium

The Second Vatican Council made a historic decision concerning Mary: instead of a separate constitution, it integrated Marian doctrine into chapter VIII of the dogmatic constitution Lumen Gentium (1964), on the Church. This choice had profound theological implications. For the full article, see The Second Vatican Council and Mary.

The great conciliar debate

In October 1963, the council fathers voted, by 1,114 votes to 1,074, to integrate the schema on Mary into the schema on the Church. This very narrow margin revealed the tension between two models: ecclesiological Mariology (Mary at the heart of the Church) and Christological Mariology (Mary in her unique closeness to Christ). The Council chose the first, without excluding the second.

Contributions of chapter VIII

Chapter VIII (nos. 52-69) of LG presented: (1) Mary in the mystery of Christ and of the Church. (2) Mary’s function in the economy of salvation. (3) Mary’s relationship with the Church. (4) The cult of Mary in the Church. (5) Guidelines for authentic Marian devotion. It was a document of great theological balance.

Post-conciliar renewal

After the Council, Paul VI published the exhortation Marialis Cultus (1974), which deepened the conciliar guidelines on Marian devotion. John Paul II, with the encyclical Redemptoris Mater (1987), gave a decisive impetus to post-conciliar Mariology, integrating the biblical, patristic, and spiritual perspective into a coherent whole.
