Mary’s Presence: The spiritual presence of the Mother in Christian life

Presença de Maria: a presença espiritual da mãe na vida cristã

# The Presence of Mary: The Spiritual Motherhood in the Christian Life

## Introduction to the Concept

The theme of the **presence of Mary** in the Christian life encompasses all the titles and privileges of the **Mother of God**, synthesizing them into an existential language. It’s not merely about coexistence, but a profound personal communication between the glorified Virgin and each believer. Contemporary personalist philosophy (Marcel, Mounier, Lévinas) has deepened the concept of presence as “knowing that someone is with me,” a communion transcending space and death, which best captures the mystery of Mary in the Church.

## Mary’s Presence in Jesus’ Life

The Gospels of the Infancy highlight Mary’s historical and maternal presence in Jesus’ life from his **Virgin Conception** (Lk 1:31) to his hidden life in **Nazareth**. Vatican II summarizes this presence: “She offered herself entirely as a servant of the Lord to the person and work of the Son, putting herself at the service of the mystery of redemption under him and with him” (LG 56). At Cana, Mary plays the role of a spiritual mother to the disciples, guiding them to faith in Jesus. On the **Calvary** (Jn 19:25-27), Jesus publicly proclaims Mary’s spiritual motherhood over the Church, represented by John. “By conceiving, giving birth, nursing, presenting him to the Father in the Temple, suffering with the Son on the cross, she cooperates in a unique way in the work of the Savior” (LG 61).

## Mary’s Presence in the Early Church and Tradition

In Acts 1:14, Mary is depicted as an integral part of the emerging Church, “devoted to prayer” with the apostles in the Upper Room. Luke draws a parallel between the **Annunciation** and Pentecost: both births—of Jesus and the Church—are marked by Mary’s dynamic presence. The patristic tradition attests to this presence. Ambrose of Milan uses the phrase *praesentia Mariae*. Cromatius of Aquileia states that “one cannot speak of the Church without mentioning Mary, the Mother of the Lord.” Germanus of Constantinople writes that Mary “dwells among us in spirit.” Bernard of Clairvaux proclaims that “the whole universe radiates with the presence of Mary.”

## Theological Interpretations of Marian Presence

Theology distinguishes five modalities of Mary’s presence:

– **Intellectual Presence:** Immersed in God in the beatific vision, Mary sees, knows, and accompanies each believer.

– **Affective Presence:** Through her maternal love, the Virgin is close to each person in time and space.

– **Operative Presence:** Love being essentially active, Mary acts in us through moral causality or physical instrumentalism.

– **Real Presence (Ragazzini):** The Virgin is present through a communication of life and participation in her fullness of grace.

– **Pneumatic-Personal Presence (modern interpretation):** In light of the mystery of the Assumption, Mary’s historical acts can be re-presented in Christ and the Spirit beyond time and space. The glorified Mary is our contemporary and can reach all her children *hic et nunc*.

## The Assumption as the Foundation for Universal Presence

The Assumption of Mary body and soul is the key theological foundation for her universal presence: “Assumed into heaven, she did not cease from this mission of salvation, but through her multiform intercession continues to obtain for us the gifts of eternal salvation. With her maternal charity, she cares for the brothers of the Son who still, as pilgrims, are in the midst of dangers and trials” (Lumen Gentium 62). Glorified, Mary is not bound by space-time limitations: she enjoys a new spiritual presence capable of reaching all her children. The spiritual conclusion to this truth is clear: “It is impossible to honor ‘the fullness of grace’ without honoring in itself the state of grace, that is, friendship with God, communion with him, the dwelling of the Holy Spirit” (Mysterium Fidei 57).
