Saint Anne and Saint Joachim: the parents of Mary

Sant’Ana e São Joaquim: os pais de Maria

Saint Anne and Saint Joachim are, according to the tradition of the Church, the parents of the Virgin Mary and the grandparents of Jesus. Although the canonical Gospels do not name them, their memory – gathered from the ancient Protoevangelium of James – has been venerated since the first centuries. Their feast is celebrated on July 26.

The parents of Mary

According to the Protoevangelium of James (second century), Joachim and Anne were a devout couple who, after long years without children, received from God the gift of Mary. To this tradition are linked the feast of the Nativity of Mary and that of her Presentation in the Temple.

The meaning

In Anne and Joachim, the Church venerates the transmission of the faith between generations and the home in which Mary was prepared for her mission. They are the patrons of grandparents, of families, and of couples without children. The World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly is celebrated close to their memorial.
