Pope Benedict XV – Decree Cum Aerea (April 12, 1921): Saint Gabriel, heavenly patron of communications (AAS 13)
- Biblical Foundation: Saint Gabriel is the “divine messenger” mentioned four times in Sacred Scripture (Daniel 8:16; 9:21; Luke 1:19; 1:26-38). He conveys the most solemn communications in the history of salvation.
- Theological Foundation: Saint Gabriel communicated the very Incarnation of the Word, the greatest communication ever made in history. All human communication aimed at truth partakes analogously in this primordial mission.
- Moral Foundation: Saint Gabriel is a model of honest communication, he did not alter God’s Word, added nothing of his own, and transmitted faithfully. He serves as a model for all journalistic and media ethics.
Subsequent Extension of Patronage
Saint Gabriel’s patronage has been successively extended to new technologies:
| Year | Pope | Included Technology |
|---|---|---|
| 1921 | Benedict XV | Telegraph, telephone, radio (original decree) |
| 1951 | Pius XII | Television + religious cinema |
| 1964 | Paul VI | Catholic broadcasters (including Radio Vatican) |
| 1990s | John Paul II | Internet and digital communications (implicit extension) |
| 2014 | Francis | Digital social communication, social media (Pastoral Institute for Communication) |
Saint Gabriel in Contemporary Media Ethics
The Pontifical Council for Social Communications (established by Pius XII in 1948 and reformed by Paul VI in 1964) has Saint Gabriel as its celestial patron. Its tasks:
- Catholic journalistic ethics
- Accompanying new digital media
- Producing Messages for World Communications Day (annually)
- Promoting Catholic broadcasters worldwide
Messages for World Communications Day
Each year, the Popes publish a Message for World Communications Day (established by Paul VI in 1967). Frequently they refer to Saint Gabriel as a model:
- John Paul II (1988): “Communicating the Truth that Liberates”, referencing St. Gabriel as a model
- Benedict XVI (2009): “New Technologies, New Relationships”, describing Gabriel as the perfect messenger
- Francis (2017): “Communicating Hope and Trust in Our Time”, revisiting the figure of Gabriel
Liturgical Feast
The feast of Saint Gabriel is celebrated on:
- September 29: Feast of the Three Angels (Michael, Gabriel, Raphael), current calendar
- March 24: Traditional pre-Vatican feasts, vigil of the Annunciation (maintained in some communities)
Media professionals celebrate this date especially, with ceremonies including the 1921 Decree as a reading.
