Outpouring of the Holy Spirit, Mary, and Pentecost
# Mary at the Cenacle, Pentecost, and the Emerging Church
The Acts of the Apostles mentions Mary for the last time in the New Testament in Acts 1:14: “All these devoted themselves to prayer, with several women and Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and his brothers.” Mary is present in the Cenacle with the Eleven and the disciples, awaiting the promised outpouring of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4-5). This presence is not incidental but theological. The Mother of Jesus, who conceived her Son by the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:35), is there at the moment the Spirit establishes the Church—the Body of Christ that she already hosted in her own body.
## The Outpouring of the Spirit and Annunciation as Pneumatological Typology
The biblical typology linking the Announcement and Pentecost is one of the richest in patristic and contemporary theology. In Luke 1:35, the angel tells Mary: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” In Acts 2:2-4, “suddenly there was a sound from heaven like a mighty wind, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.” The “shadow” (episkiasei) of the Spirit over Mary at the Announcement and the “tongues of fire” (glôssai hôsei pyros) over the disciples at Pentecost are two outpourings of the same Spirit: the first generates Christ’s Body in Mary’s womb, the second generates the Church as Christ’s Body.
## Mary, the Spirit, and the Church: A Trinitarian Articulation
The Second Vatican Council, in Lumen Gentium (LG 63-65), developed this pneumatological typology. Mary is “the sign of a sure hope and consolation for the People of God” (LG 68) and its most perfect model (LG 63). Her presence at Pentecost, as theologians like Yves Congar (Je crois en l’Esprit Saint) argue, fulfills her pneumatological mission: just as she cooperated with the Spirit in the Incarnation, so she cooperates with the Spirit in the founding of the Church. Mariology and pneumatology are inseparable; where the Spirit acts fully, Mary is present.
