The Imitation of Mary: Following in the Mother’s Footsteps
The imitation of Mary is a central theme of Marian spirituality. Christian tradition proposes Mary not only as intercessor, but as a model to be followed. Her virtues—humility, obedience, charity, contemplation—are a concrete path of sanctification.
Mary as a Model of Holiness
The Second Vatican Council (Lumen Gentium no. 65) presents Mary as a model of virtues for the whole Church. The document underscores that Mary is not merely a past example, but a living model: the Church must imitate Mary in order to be what Mary is, a faithful disciple, a fruitful Mother, a witness to eschatological hope.
The Virtues of Mary
The virtues most frequently proposed for imitation are these: humility (the Magnificat as the canticle of the little one who recognizes himself as such). Obedience (the Fiat as total availability). Charity (the Visitation as readiness in service). Contemplation (the “she kept it in her heart” as a fundamental attitude).
Spiritual Tradition
The Marian spirituality of Saint Louis-Marie de Montfort (Treatise on True Devotion) proposes an imitation of Mary that passes through consecration: the Christian asks Mary to lend him her virtues, her sentiments, her way of loving God. This path is not a detour away from Christ, but the shortest way to Him.
