Imitation of Mary: Following in the footsteps of the Mother

# Imitation of Mary: Following in the Mother’s Footsteps
The **imitation of Mary** is a central theme in Marian spirituality. Christian tradition proposes Mary not only as an intercessor but as a role model to be followed. Her virtues—humility, obedience, charity, contemplation—offer a concrete path to sanctification.
## Mary as a Model of Holiness
The Second Vatican Council (Concile Vaticano II) presents Mary as a **model of virtues** for the entire Church. In Lumen Gentium (n. 65), the document emphasizes that Mary is not merely a historical example but a living model: the Church should imitate Mary to become what Mary is—a faithful disciple, a fruitful mother, a witness to eschatological hope.
## The Virtues of Mary
The most frequently proposed virtues for imitation are: **humility** (reflected in the Magnificat), **obedience** (seen in her Fiat), **charity** (exemplified in the Visitation), and **contemplation** (evident in her constant pondering).
## Spiritual Tradition
St. Louis Maria de Montfort’s Marian spirituality, as presented in his *True Devotion to Mary* (Tratado da Verdadeira Devoção), encourages imitation of Mary through consecration: Christians ask Mary to lend them her virtues, feelings, and way of loving God. This path is not a deviation from Christ but the shortest way to Him.

## Church Teaching
> **Blessed is the man who hears me, and keeps watch at my doors daily… Whoever finds me will find life.**
>
> — *Proverbs* 8:34-35 (Vulgata, applied to Mary from tradition)
**Literal Translation:**
> *“He who follows me will not walk in darkness” (John 8:12). The imitation of Mary is the way to imitate Christ: through Mary to Jesus.*
