John Paul II – Act of Commitment to the Immaculate Heart of Mary (December 8, 1983 and March 25, 1984)

Em 8 de dezembro de 1983, na festa da Imaculada Conceição, no contexto do Ano Santo Extraordinário da Redenção (1983-1984), o Papa São João Paulo II dirigiu uma carta a todos os bispos do mundo, convidando-os a unirem-se a ele em 25 de março de 1984 (festa da Anunciação) para realizarem uma consagração solene do mundo ao Coração Imaculado de Maria. Cari fratelli nel ministero episcopale,

Il 25 marzo 1983 abbiamo iniziato il giubileo straordinario della redenzione. Vi ringrazio ancora una volta per esservi uniti a me nell’inaugurare, in quello stesso giorno, l’anno della redenzione nelle vostre diocesi. La solennità dell’annunciazione, che ricorda nel corso dell’anno liturgico l’inizio dell’opera della redenzione nella storia dell’umanità, è apparsa particolarmente adatta per tale inaugurazione…

In questo giorno, solennità dell’immacolata concezione, la Chiesa medita il potere salvifico della redenzione di Cristo nel concepimento della donna, destinata a essere la Madre del Redentore.

n. 556, «Sotto la tua protezione cerchiamo rifugio, santa Madre di Dio»! Pronunciando le parole di questa antifona, con cui la Chiesa di Cristo prega da secoli, ci troviamo oggi dinanzi a te, Madre, nell’anno giubilare della nostra redenzione.

Ci troviamo uniti con tutti i pastori della Chiesa, in un particolare vincolo, costituendo un corpo e un collegio, così come per volontà di Cristo gli apostoli costituivano un corpo e un collegio con Pietro.

Nel vincolo di tale unità, pronunciamo le parole del presente atto, nel quale desideriamo racchiudere, ancora una volta, le speranze e le angosce della Chiesa per il mondo contemporaneo.

Quaranta anni fa, e poi dieci anni fa ancora, il tuo servo, il papa Pio XII, avendo dinanzi agli occhi le dolorose esperienze della famiglia umana, affidò e consacrò al tuo Cuore Immacolato il mondo intero, particolarmente i popoli che costituivano oggetto del tuo amore e della tua sollecitudine.

Encontramo-nos unidos com todos os pastores da Igreja, num especial vínculo, constituindo um corpo e um colégio, assim como por vontade de Cristo os apóstolos constituíam um corpo e um colégio com Pedro.

Within the bond of such unity, we pronounce the words of this present act, in which we wish to summarize once more the hopes and anxieties of the Church for the contemporary world.

Forty years ago, and ten years later still, your servant Pope Pius XII, with the painful experiences of humanity before his eyes, entrusted and consecrated the whole world, especially the peoples that were the object of your love and care, to your Immaculate Heart.

Context: The Tradition of Consecration to Fátima

John Paul II explicitly indicates that the text of the Act “corresponds, with minor changes, to what I proclaimed in Fátima on 13 May 1982”. The consecration of 1982 was carried out a year after the attack on his life on 13 May 1981. The Pope attributed his survival to the intervention of Our Lady of Fátima.

Ecclesiastical Significance

The Act of 25 March 1984 is theologically unique because it was made by the Pope in communion with ALL the bishops worldwide, fulfilling what Fátima’s request required (“the Pope in union with all the bishops of the world”). This collegiate dimension is fundamental: Mary is not a personal devotion but a global communion of the Church.
