Saint Maximilian Kolbe: The Martyr of the Immaculate One

Saint Maximilian Maria Kolbe (1894-1941) is one of the most significant Marian saints of the twentieth century: a Polish Franciscan, founder of the Militia Immaculatae, missionary in Japan, victim of the Auschwitz concentration camp, where he offered his life for his fellow prisoner Franciszek Gajowniczek.

The Militia Immaculatae

In 1917, Kolbe founded the Militia Immaculatae (MI), a movement of consecration to the Immaculate One for the conversion of sinners and of the enemies of the Church. It became one of the largest Marian movements of the twentieth century, with millions of members throughout the world. Its spirituality is centered on total consecration to the Immaculate One.

Theology of the Immaculate One

Kolbe developed a bold theology of the Immaculate One: Mary is the “quasi-incarnation” of the Holy Spirit, His perfect icon in the world. This formulation, which must be understood with care, expresses the conviction that Mary is more closely united to the Holy Spirit than any other created being.

Auschwitz and the Martyrdom

In August 1941, in the Auschwitz concentration camp, Kolbe offered himself to die in the place of Franciszek Gajowniczek, a father of a family. He died of starvation in the death cell on August 14, the eve of the feast of the Assumption. He was canonized by John Paul II in 1982 as a martyr of charity.
