# Mary and Evangelization: The First EvangelistMary holds a unique place in the history of evangelization: she is both evangelized (she received the Gospel from the angel) and an evangelist (she proclaimed it to the world through her entire life). The Apostolic Exhortation *Evangelii Nuntiandi* (Paul VI, 1975) and *Marialis Cultus* present Mary as a model of the Church’s evangelizing mission, one who “received the word of God with faith” and translated it into concrete action in service to humanity.## Mary’s Evangelization in ScriptureMary’s evangelizing actions permeate the Gospel accounts of her childhood. At the **Anunciation**, Mary receives the Gospel of prophecy passed down through generations and responds with responsible faith: “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word” (Lk 1:38). At the **Visitation**, Mary brings the incarnate Word to Elizabeth, and John the Baptist rejoices in his mother’s womb. The **Magnificat** is Mary’s song of the announcer of mercy, proclaiming what God accomplishes in humanity open to His action. In **Bethlehem**, Mary gives birth to the long-awaited Savior. In the Acts (1:14), Mary remains with the apostolic community in prayer, preparing for Pentecost.## Characteristics of Mary’s EvangelizationMary’s evangelization has three fundamental characteristics:**Centrality in Christ:** Every aspect of Mary’s life is centered on the Word made flesh; she does not evangelize in her own name but leads and presents Christ.**Incarnation of the Message:** Mary does not merely convey words but makes the Savior present through her concrete motherhood.**Service:** Her evangelization is a service, as seen in her visit to Elizabeth, her three months with Isabel, her presence at the Cross, and her prayer at the Cenacle. *Marialis Cultus* describes Mary as “a virgin who listens, prays, offers, and gives to the world” (MC 17-20): four attitudes that define a Christian evangelist.## Mary as a Model for the Evangelizing ChurchMary serves as a model for the Church in its evangelizing mission, demonstrating through her life the essence of sharing the Good News with faith, love, and service. The Vatican Council II (LG 65) states that the Church, reflecting on Mary’s sanctity, recognizes “its own mystery” and learns to walk with faith toward fulfilling its mission. *Evangelii Nuntiandi* (EN 82) describes Mary as “the Star of Evangelization”: “She was the most humble and capable of receiving God’s gift within herself. She was the first and perfect disciple of Christ.” For contemporary evangelizers, Mary remains the model of “active and responsible consent to the Incarnation of the Word” (MC 37), one who heard, believed, and made present the Savior in the world.**Deepen your studies:** Explore Mariology, Magnificat, Visitation, and Postgraduate Studies in Mariology.—**Church Magisterium:***”Maria est stella evangelizationis: ipsa enim prima et perfectissima discipula Christi fuit, quae verbum Dei accepit et in mundo annuntiavit.”*— Pope Paul VI, *Evangelii Nuntiandi*, n. 82 (December 8, 1975)**Literal Translation:** Mary is the star of evangelization: she was indeed the first and most perfect disciple of Christ, who received the word of God and announced it to the world.—*”Quodcumque dixerit vobis, facite.”*— *John* 2:5 (Vulgata Clementina)**Literal Translation:** Whatever he tells you, do.
