Pius XII and the Rosary: An Instrument of Faith and Peace

Pius XII and the Rosary: the decisive role of Pacelli’s pontificate in strengthening Marian prayer.
Pius XII and the Rosary: introduction
The pontificate of Pius XII and the Rosary form a fundamental pairing in the modern history of Marian devotion. Pius XII (1939-1958) gave the Rosary unparalleled prominence in the magisterium of the Church, against the backdrop of the Second World War, the postwar period, and the Cold War. Together, Pius XII and the Rosary stand for faith and peace.
I. Pius XII and the Rosary during the Second World War
Pius XII and the Rosary are intimately linked to the drama of the Second World War. The Pope repeatedly appealed for the praying of the Rosary for peace. In 1942, he consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Pius XII and the Rosary became synonymous with spiritual resistance against totalitarianism.
II. The Marian encyclicals of Pius XII and the Rosary
The magisterium of Pius XII on the Rosary finds expression in several encyclicals: Ingruentium Malorum (1951), entirely devoted to the Rosary; Ad Caeli Reginam (1954), on the Queenship of Mary; and Le Pèlerinage de Lourdes (1957). In all of them, Pius XII and the Rosary appear as a single program: to entrust humanity to Mary through Marian prayer.
III. Pius XII and the Rosary in the family
Pius XII lays special emphasis on the Rosary in the family. The Pope repeats, quoting a popular saying: “The family that prays together stays together.” Pius XII puts forward the recitation of the Rosary at home as a privileged means of domestic evangelization and of protecting families in the face of secularization.
IV. Pius XII and the Rosary: the Assumption (1950)
The high point of Pius XII’s Marian pontificate is the dogmatic definition of the Assumption of Mary (Munificentissimus Deus, 1950). Here Pius XII and the Rosary are intertwined: by defining the dogma, Pius XII gave the Rosary new content in its glorious mysteries. The Assumption and the Coronation acquired renewed dogmatic weight.
V. The legacy of Pius XII and the Rosary
The legacy of Pius XII and the Rosary is decisive for the later magisterium: John XXIII, Paul VI, and John Paul II carried his line forward. Pius XII offered the Church a model of Marian magisterium grounded in prayer, devotion, and doctrine. See the Documents of Pius XII.
