Mary’s Rosary: prayer and meditation with the Virgin

Mary’s Rosary: A Marian Meditation on the Mysteries of Christ’s Life with the Virgin Mary.
Rosary of Mary: Introduction
The Rosary of Mary is one of the oldest and most beloved Marian prayers. It is not simply a recitation of Hail Marys; it is a meditation on the mysteries of Christ’s life, seen through Mary’s eyes. Thus, Pope John Paul II, in his Rosarium Virginis Mariae, described the Rosary of Mary as a “compendium of the Gospel”.
I. Origin and History of the Rosary of Mary
The history of the Rosary of Mary dates back to the early centuries of monastic spirituality: monks prayed 150 psalms daily, and laypeople substituted them with 150 Hail Marys. With St. Dominic and the Dominicans in the 13th century, the Rosary of Mary took its current structure. Blessed Alanus de Rupe, in the 15th century, gave it its present form.
II. Structure of the Rosary of Mary
The Rosary of Mary consists of four sets of five mysteries: Joyful (Tuesday and Saturday), Luminous (Friday), Sorrowful (Wednesday and Friday), and Glorious (Monday and Sunday). Each mystery of the Rosary of Mary is a contemplative window into Christ’s life and that of Mary. The Luminous mysteries were added by John Paul II in 2002.
III. The Rosary of Mary as Contemplation
The Rosary of Mary is, above all, a contemplative prayer. To pray the Rosary of Mary is to look at the mysteries of Christ with Mary. Therefore, it is not a mechanical repetition; each Hail Mary is a sigh of love that accompanies interior contemplation. The liturgy of the Rosary of Mary forms us in a Marian perspective on Christ.
IV. The Rosary of Mary in Church Teaching
The Church has always supported the Rosary of Mary: Pius V, Leo XIII (with several encyclicals dedicated to the Rosary), Paul VI in Marialis Cultus, and John Paul II in Rosarium Virginis Mariae. Today, the Rosary of Mary continues to be promoted by the Church as a privileged means for personal peace and holiness.
V. How to Pray the Rosary of Mary
