Mary’s salutary influence and the unique mediation of Christ

Mary's salutary influence - religious dome with iconography of Mary and of Christ

Our mediator is but one, according to the word of the Apostle: “there is but one God and one mediator between God and men, the one Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for the redemption of all” (1 Tim 2:5-6). But Mary’s maternal function toward men in no way obscures or diminishes this unique mediation of Christ. Rather, it manifests its efficacy. For every saving influence of the Most Holy Virgin upon men is owed to the divine good pleasure and not to any necessity. It derives from the abundance of the merits of Christ, is founded upon His mediation and depends entirely upon it, drawing from it all its efficacy. In no way does it impede the immediate union of the faithful with Christ; rather, it fosters it. (Lumen Gentium, 60)

To deepen the study of Mary’s mediation in Christ, we recommend the encyclical Redemptoris Mater by John Paul II.
