Our Lady of Hrushiv, the Ukrainian apparitions of 1987

Our Lady of Hrushiv: The Village of Apparitions
Hrushiv (in Ukrainian: Грушів) is a small village in the Lviv Oblast, in western Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union. On April 26, 1987, exactly one year after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster (April 26, 1986), a 12-year-old girl named Marina Kizyn reported seeing Our Lady of Hrushiv standing over a small chapel, dressed in traditional Ukrainian attire, and cradling the Child Jesus, who was in tears. The vision began at 6 a.m. and lasted for several hours. In the days that followed, hundreds, and then thousands, of pilgrims flocked to the village, many traveling long distances on foot under Soviet surveillance. Many reported luminous phenomena, graces, and experiences of conversion, making Hrushiv one of the most significant centers of Marian pilgrimage in Eastern Europe in the 20th century.Context: Chernobyl and Soviet Ukraine
The Hrushiv apparitions occurred in an exceptional context. Ukraine was under official atheist rule. The Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church had been banned by Stalin in 1946 and forced into clandestinity. In April 1986, the No. 4 reactor at Chernobyl exploded, causing the largest civil nuclear disaster in history.
The Marian apparitions exactly one year later were seen as a divine consolation message to a suffering people. For many believers, Our Lady of Hrushiv appeared as a sign that the Mother of God would not abandon Ukraine in its hour of greatest need, confirming prophecies attributed to Our Lady of Fátima about the conversion of Russia and communist countries.
Messages of Hrushiv
According to witness accounts, the messages of Our Lady of Hrushiv focused on three central themes: penance and conversion of the Ukrainian people, the suffering of the Church under communism, and the hope of imminent liberation. One of the most cited phrases proclaims: “Pray, Ukraine, for your liberation is near.” This message gained prophetic resonance when, in 1991, Ukraine regained independence and the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church was legalized once again. For the faithful, the fulfillment of this promise solidified the credibility of the apparitions as a genuine spiritual phenomenon, worthy of theological and pastoral attention.
Previous Traditions: 1914 and 1954
Local tradition recounts previous apparitions in the same chapel in 1914, coinciding with the start of World War I, and in 1954. These earlier apparitions were not documented to the same extent as those in 1987, but they are part of the collective memory of the community. The continuity from 1914 to 1954 to 1987 was interpreted as a pattern of Our Lady of Hrushiv’s intervention during moments of historical crisis for the Ukrainian people. Each of these dates corresponds to a period of particular suffering, reinforcing popular devotion’s conviction that this village is a place of special and repeated Marian presence.
