What to ask Saint Joseph: intercession, graces, and the “miracles”

By Prof. Dr. Daniel C. Afonso · Updated
To Saint Joseph, one can ask for all that he himself protected in life: the family, work and sustenance, the home, protection from dangers, purity, and a good death. The Church teaches that the saints intercede for us with God, and Saint Joseph, the guardian of Jesus and Mary, is one of the most invoked. Saint Teresa of Avila testified that she never asked him for anything that he did not obtain. It is not about magical formulas, but about trust: God is the one who grants graces.
In summary
- The family: the union of husband and wife, children, the peace of the home.
- The Work: employment, sustenance, and honesty in work.
- At home: a place to dwell, as he sought in Bethlehem and in Egypt.
- Dangers and difficulties: He protected Jesus from Herod’s persecution.
- A good death: he is the patron of a good death (Catechism, n. 1014).
- Discernment: He received God’s will in dreams and obeyed.
Why to pray to Saint Joseph
The Church believes in the communion of saints: those who are with God continue to be united to us and intercede for us (Catechism, no. 956). Among all the saints, Saint Joseph holds a unique place, for God entrusted him with his greatest treasures, Jesus and Mary. Therefore, Blessed Pius IX declared him Patron of the Universal Church in 1870. See Saint Joseph is the patron of what?.
Saint Teresa of Ávila, a Doctor of the Church, was one of the great promoters of this devotion. In the *Book of Life* (ch. 6), she relates that she took Saint Joseph as her advocate, and that she did not remember asking him for anything that he did not obtain, and she invited those who did not believe to try it.
What to Ask Saint Joseph
For the Family
Joseph was the husband of Mary and the father of Jesus on earth. He is invoked for the unity of spouses, for children, for parents, and for the peace of the home. See The Betrothal of Mary and Joseph.
By work and sustenance
Joseph was a carpenter (Mt 13:55) and supported the Holy Family through his work. He is invoked for employment, daily bread, and honesty in labor. See Saint Joseph the Worker.
For a House
Joseph sought a place in Bethlehem, where “there was no room for them in the inn” (Lk 2:7), and took the family to Egypt and then to Nazareth. That is why many confide to him the search for a home.
In dangers and difficulties
In a dream, Joseph fled with the Child and His Mother to Egypt, saving Jesus from Herod (Mt 2:13-15). Since 2021, the Litany invokes him as «refuge in difficulties», «patron of the afflicted» and «patron of the exiled». See Litany of Saint Joseph.
By the Good Death
The Catechism exhorts the faithful “to confide in St. Joseph, patron of a good death” (no. 1014). It is one of the oldest intentions of his devotion. See The Transit of St. Joseph.
To Know What God Wants
In the four dreams of Saint Joseph, God shows him what to do, and he obeys without delay. That is why he is also prayed to for light in decisions. Pope Francis told in Manila in 2015 that he keeps an image of Saint Joseph sleeping and places beneath it a note with his problems, «so that he dreams» them.
And what of Saint Joseph’s “miracles”?
The Gospels do not narrate any miracles performed by Saint Joseph; he appears as the righteous man who welcomes, protects, and works in silence. What the Church recognizes are the graces obtained through his intercession, as with any saint, for it is always God who grants them.
There are also popular tales, such as the spiral staircase in the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in the United States, which local tradition attributes to a mysterious carpenter. The Church has never declared it a miracle.
Therefore, it is good to be wary of promises such as “prayer that never fails” or chains that demand repeating a prayer a certain number of times. Prayer is not a technique. What “never fails” is trust in God, who always listens, even when He responds in another way.
How to pray to Saint Joseph
- With a prayer from the Church, such as “To you, Saint Joseph, we turn” (Leão XIII) or the “Hail, Saint Joseph” (Ladainha de São José). See The Day of Saint Joseph. With the consecration to Saint Joseph.Always inseparable from Christian life: Mass, confession, and charity.
Frequently Asked Questions
