Mary, mother of hope: we are children of hope

Mary, Mother of Hope: Reflection on the Virgin Mary as Model and Mother of Christian Hope.
Mary, Mother of Hope: Introduction
Mary, Mother of Hope, is an ancient title in Christian tradition. We are children of hope because we have a Mother who is herself the first hoped-for in the history of salvation. Mary, Mother of Hope, teaches us to wait with confidence for the fulfillment of God’s promises.
I. Biblical Foundation of Mary, Mother of Hope
The biblical foundation of Mary, Mother of Hope, is found throughout her journey: from the Annunciation (“let it be done to me according to your word“, Lk 1:38) to waiting in the Cenacle (Acts 1:14). Mary waits against all human hope, like Abraham (Rom 4:18). Through the cross of her Son, Mary, Mother of Hope, keeps the flame of the promise alive, a model for the Church on pilgrimage.
II. Mary, Mother of Hope, in the Magnificat
The Magnificat (Lk 1:46-55) is Mary’s hymn of hope. She proclaims the greatness of the Lord who “threw down the mighty from their thrones and lifted up the humble”. Mary, Mother of Hope, sees already fulfilled, in God’s logic, the promises made to Abraham and his descendants. Her hope is not optimism; it is faith in God keeping His word.
III. Mary, Mother of Hope, at the Cross
At the Cross (Jn 19:25-27), Mary, Mother of Hope, stands firm. She does not flee, doubt, or curse. Her hope is so steadfast that it becomes the foundation of the Church’s hope. It is in moments when all seems lost that Mary, Mother of Hope, shines as a bright sign of certain faith and consolation for God’s people on their way.
IV. Mary, Mother of Hope, in the Church
Lumen Gentium 68 teaches: “The Mother of Jesus, just as she was glorified in heaven both in body and soul, is the image and the beginning of the Church which will have its perfection in the age to come; thus on earth she shines as a sign of hope and consolation for the people of God on their pilgrimage”. Mary, Mother of Hope, is the star guiding the Church on pilgrimage.
V. We are Children of Hope
Looking to Mary, Mother of Hope, we rediscover that we are children of hope. In a culture marked by cynicism and disillusionment, Mary offers us a Christian way of hoping: active, patient, grounded in God. Mary, Mother of Hope, intercedes for her children so they do not falter. To delve deeper, consult Pope Francis’s Bull Spes non confundit for the 2025 Jubilee.
