Marian apparitions are phenomena where Mary becomes visible and communicates messages to one or several visionaries. The Catholic Church evaluates these experiences with rigorous criteria, potentially classifying them as condigno (worthy of belief), always leaving the faith of the faithful free to embrace private revelations.Discernment Criteria
The Congregation for Doctrine of the Faith published new norms in 2024 for the discernment of apparitions. Fundamental criteria include: conformity with Catholic faith and morality, psychological health of the visionaries, spiritual fruits (conversions, vocations, peace), absence of commercial interest, and consistency of messages with the Gospel.Approved Apparitions
Notable apparitions recognized by the Church include: Fátima (1917), Lourdes (1858), Guadalupe (1531), Beauraing (1932-33), Banneux (1933), and La Salette (1846). Each has a distinct character and specific message.Nature of Private Revelations
