Biblical foundation: Cana
The episode of the Wedding at Cana is the gospel model of Marian intercession. Mary perceives the need, presents it to Jesus without dictating the answer, and directs the servants toward obedience to Him. This pattern — perceiving, presenting, trusting — defines Mary’s manner of intercession.
Heavenly intercession
The Second Vatican Council (LG 62) affirms: “This maternity of Mary in the economy of grace endures without interruption, from the consent which she faithfully gave at the Annunciation and which she maintained without wavering beneath the Cross, until the consummation of all the elect.” Mary’s death did not interrupt her intercessory mission; rather, it brought it to fullness.
Distinction from the one mediation of Christ
Mary’s intercession is always subordinate to the one mediation of Christ (1 Tim 2:5). Mary does not intercede by her own merit, but by the grace received from Christ. Her intercession is a participation in the mediation of the one Mediator, not a competition with it. This distinction is fundamental for avoiding theological and ecumenical misunderstandings.
