Our Lady of Pontmain: Hope in the Winter of War

Our Lady of Pontmain appeared to four children on January 17, 1871, at Pontmain (Brittany, France), during the Franco-Prussian War. The apparition lasted about three hours, visible only to the children, while the adults prayed. Three days later, the armistice was signed. For the full article: Our Lady of Pontmain.

The Apparition

The children saw a beautiful Woman clothed in blue, with golden stars, who progressively revealed a written message: “But pray, my children. God will hear you before long. My Son allows Himself to be touched.” The sky was clear and starry. The adults saw nothing, but they prayed the Rosary and the Salve Regina.

Approval and Shrine

The Bishop of Laval approved the apparitions in 1872. The shrine of Pontmain was built on the site of the apparitions and became an important pilgrimage center in northwestern France. The message of Pontmain, hope in tribulation, the efficacy of prayer, is particularly relevant in times of crisis.
