Leo XIII – Supremi apostolatus (1883): the first encyclical on the Rosary and the month of October (Doctrina Pontificia IV, nn. 326-338).

The encyclical Supremi apostolatus (September 1, 1883) of Leo XIII is the first document of his unequaled series of thirteen encyclicals on the Rosary. With it, the pope institutes the month of October as the month of the Rosary, establishing a tradition that lasts to this day throughout the Christian Church. It is also the document that most explicitly links the Rosary to the battle of Lepanto (1571) and to the victory of Pius V, presenting the Rosary as the Church’s “weapon of choice” in her moments of crisis.

Historical context

In 1883, the Church was facing secularist persecution in France (the Jules Ferry Laws, 1882, which expelled religious from the schools and prohibited religious instruction in the public schools), Bismarck’s Kulturkampf in Germany, and the scientific positivism that intended to reduce religion to superstition. In this context, Leo XIII had recourse to the “weapon” that Pius V had used at Lepanto: the Rosary.

Key text, nn. 326-338

«Inter praecipua Mariae cultui destinata pia exercitia, Rosarium, quod vulgo Psalterium Virginis appellant, unum ex potissimis merito habendum est. Piissimus enim orandi modus, qui ordine et serie Angelicae Salutationis mysteria Dominicae Incarnationis et Passionis percurrens iterumque ad gloriam perveniens, etiam meditationem in se complectitur…»

, Among the principal pious exercises destined for the cult of Mary, the Rosary, commonly called the Psalter of the Virgin, must rightly be considered one of the most excellent. For this most pious manner of praying, which, running through the mysteries of the Incarnation and Passion of the Lord in the order and series of the Angelic Salutation, and coming again to the glory, includes in itself also meditation…

The month of October as the month of the Rosary

Leo XIII determines that throughout the month of October, in all the churches of the world, the Rosary be recited “at least five decades” with exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and the Litanies of Our Lady. The exposition of the Blessed Sacrament during the Rosary is a significant innovation: it unites Eucharistic devotion with Marian devotion, showing that the two are not competing but complementary.

The argument of Lepanto

Leo XIII develops the historical argument of Lepanto: on October 7, 1571, while Pius V was having the Rosary prayed, the Christian fleet defeated the Ottoman fleet. “If God had not helped us, Christian civilization would have been destroyed”. The pope presents the challenges of his own time as equally grave, and the Rosary as the same response.

Pastoral impact

Supremi apostolatus inaugurated one of the most enduring traditions of the Christian Church: the month of October dedicated to the Rosary. This tradition lasts to this day in parishes, families, and religious communities throughout the world. John Paul II, in publishing Rosarium Virginis Mariae in 2002, explicitly invoked Leo XIII as the predecessor who had most deepened the theology of the Rosary.
