Clement of Alexandria: Mariology and the Theology of the Logos

Clemente de Alexandria: mariologia e teologia do lógos

Clement of Alexandria: the Alexandrian master and his contribution to Mariology and Logos theology.

Clement of Alexandria: Introduction

Clement of Alexandria (c. 150–c. 215) is one of the great Fathers of the Eastern Church. Clement of Alexandria’s reflection on Mary is embedded in his theology of the Logos: the divine Word who becomes flesh and pedagogically guides the Christian towards perfection. Studying Clement of Alexandria offers a glimpse into the origins of Patristic Mariology and Christian speculative theology.

I. Life and Works of Clement of Alexandria

Clement of Alexandria succeeded Pantenus as head of the famous Catechetical School of Alexandria. His major works are Protrepticus (Exhortation to the Greeks), Paedagogus (Pedagogue), and Stromata (Miscellany). Throughout these works, Clement of Alexandria seeks to demonstrate the continuity between Greek philosophy and Christian revelation, with Christ as the universal Logos.

II. Clement of Alexandria and Logos Theology

Clement of Alexandria’s theology of the Logos begins with John 1:1-14: the eternal Word, present in all truth and human wisdom, incarnates in Christ. This Logos theology paves the way for Mariology: Mary is the one in whom the Logos becomes flesh. By speaking of the Word, Clement of Alexandria implicitly speaks of the Mother of the Word.

III. Clement of Alexandria and Mary’s Virginity

In the Paedagogus, Clement of Alexandria clearly affirms Mary’s virginity even in childbirth. Comparing her to a daring image, Clement states that Mary gave birth yet was not a mother because the Word was born without violating her virgin womb. This intuition from Clement of Alexandria prefigures the doctrine of the Virgin Birth.

IV. Mary, Mother and Virgin in the Church

Clement of Alexandria develops a beautiful parallel: as Mary is Mother and Virgin, so too is the Church simultaneously mother and virgin. This intuition from Clement of Alexandria, taken up by Ambrose and Augustine, forms the foundation for Marian ecclesiology. The Church bears children as Mary bore Christ: through the action of the Spirit.

V. Clement of Alexandria’s Legacy

Clement of Alexandria’s legacy to Mariology is twofold: integrating Mariology into Logos theology and the parallel between Mary–Church. He was also the master of Origen, who would continue these insights. Delve deeper into Mariology, Marian theology, and Patristic Mariology on Locus Mariologicus.
