John Paul II and the Rosary: The Marian Invitation of the Polish Pope to the Church of the Third Millennium.

John Paul II and the Rosary: Introduction

The relationship between John Paul II and the Rosary is one of the most intimate and fruitful during his pontificate. John Paul II and the Rosary were inseparable for 27 years. The Polish Pope prayed it daily, promoted it worldwide, and culminated this Marian devotion with the Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae (2002).

I. John Paul II and the Rosary: Personal Testimony

Since childhood in Wadowice, John Paul II and the Rosary have gone hand in hand. Following the 1981 assassination attempt, John Paul II attributed his survival to the Rosary and Our Lady of Fátima. On all apostolic journeys, John Paul II and the Rosary were together: the rosary accompanied him in his hands before crowds.

II. Rosarium Virginis Mariae (2002)

John Paul II’s programmatic document on the Rosary is the Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae (October 16, 2002), which opened the “Year of the Rosary” (October 2002 – October 2003). In it, John Paul II and the Rosary are presented as a path to Christian contemplation, peace, and family. It is the most significant papal document on the Rosary.

III. The Luminous Mysteries: John Paul II and the Rosary

The major innovation of John Paul II and the Rosary was the introduction of the five Luminous Mysteries: Baptism in the Jordan, Cana, Proclamation of the Kingdom, Transfiguration, and Eucharist. John Paul II and the Rosary complete this contemplation of Jesus’ public life, previously lacking in the traditional rosary.

IV. John Paul II and the Rosary for Family and Peace

John Paul II and the Rosary promoted it especially for two intentions: world peace (in the aftermath of 9/11) and family. Praying the Rosary as a family was, for John Paul II, a school of faith and a laboratory of communion. He reminded the old saying: “A family that prays together stays united.”

V. The Legacy of John Paul II and the Rosary

The legacy of John Paul II and the Rosary continues to inspire the Church: Benedict XVI and Francis have continued this tradition. Delve into the relationship between John Paul II and the Rosary in the Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, an indispensable reading.
