Our Lady of La Salette appeared on September 19, 1846, in the French Alps, to two shepherds, Mélanie Calvat (15 years old) and Maximin Giraud (11 years old). Mary appeared weeping, seated on a stone. The apparition and the message
Our Lady spoke in French (and briefly in the local dialect) for about 45 minutes. The central message: the people have abandoned religious practice, do not observe the Sunday rest, and blaspheme the name of God. “If my people will not submit, I shall be forced to let fall the arm of my Son.” Each seer also received a personal secret.
Approval and the Missionaries of La Salette
The Bishop of Grenoble approved the apparitions in 1851. In 1852, the Congregation of the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette was founded, and today it works in more than 20 countries. The shrine, at 1,800 meters above sea level, is among the most remarkable in Europe.
