# Nossa Senhora de La Salette: the weeping messenger

## The Appearance and Message

Our Lady appeared in French (and briefly in the local dialect) to two shepherds, Mélanie Calvat (aged 15) and Maximin Giraud (aged 11), on September 19, 1846, in the French Alps. She was seated on a stone, weeping. The central message of La Salette is an urgent call for conversion: “If my people do not submit, I shall be forced to withdraw the hand of My Son.” Each visionary also received a personal secret.

## Approval and the Missionaries of La Salette

The Bishop of Grenoble approved the apparitions in 1851. In 1852, the Congregation of Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette was founded, now working in over 20 countries. The sanctuary, located at an altitude of 1,800 meters, is one of the most notable in Europe.
