Appearance and Message

Our Lady of La Salette appeared on September 19, 1846, in the French Alps to two shepherds, Mélanie Calvat (15 years old) and Maximin Giraud (11 years old). Mary appeared weeping, seated on a stone. The message of La Salette is an urgent call to conversion. For the full article: *Our Lady of La Salette*.During her approximately 45-minute conversation, Our Lady spoke in French (and briefly in the local dialect). The central message: the people have abandoned religious practice, do not observe the Sabbath rest, and blaspheme God’s name. “If my people do not submit, I am forced to withdraw the hand of my Son.” Each visionary also received a personal secret.

Approval and the Missionaries of La Salette

The Bishop of Grenoble approved the apparitions in 1851. In 1852, the Congregation of Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette was founded, now working in over 20 countries. The sanctuary, at 1,800 meters altitude, is one of the most notable in Europe.
