# Mary, the Servant: Humility of the Ancilla Domini## Introduction
In the Annunciation, Mary presents herself to the Angel with a title that defines her forever: *”behold the handmaid [ancilla] of the Lord”* (Luke 1:38). This self-designation, echoed in the Magnificat (*”he has looked upon his handmaid”*), is one of the richest and most contemplative aspects of Mariology.## Biblical Meaning
The Greek term *doule* (servant, slave) is the feminine form of *doulos*, which St. Paul uses for himself in his letters’ openings. It’s not a conventional humility; it’s a radical, unconditional surrender to the Lord. When Mary says *ancilla*, she does not diminish herself; instead, she asserts her deepest identity as a creature in a total love relationship with the Creator.## Mary as the New Eve
The New Eve corrects the attitude of the first Eve: where Eve wanted to be “like God” (Genesis 3:5), Mary affirms her servitude. This reversal is the matrix of salvation: Mary’s humble obedience undoes Eve’s proud disobedience. Irenaeus of Lyons developed this typology in the 2nd century.## The Servant as Queen
A Marian paradox is that the servant is also a Queen. The path of humble service led Mary to the glory of Assumption and Coronation. This dialectic lies at the heart of the Magnificat: the humble are exalted, and the powerful are brought low. Mary’s greatness comes from her humility before God.**Deepen your study:** Explore Mariology, Marian Theology, Marian Apparitions, and a Postgraduate Degree in Mariology.—## Church Teaching
