# Dedication of Santa Maria Maior: Rome’s Premier Marian Sanctuary

The **Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore** is regarded as the first and grandest Marian sanctuary in Rome. Its dedication on August 5th commemorates the construction of this basilica by Sixtus III (432-440) shortly after the Council of Ephesus (431), honoring Mary’s divine maternity, the Theotokos.

## Historical Origins and the Snow Legend

A popular tradition attributes the basilica’s construction to a miraculous snowfall on August 5th, under Pope Liberius (352-366), atop the Esquiline Hill. However, historically, the basilica we know today was built by Sixtus III, exactly one year after the solemn declaration of the doctrine of the Virgin’s divine maternity at the Council of Ephesus. The liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council replaced the former title “Santa Maria ad Nives” (Saint Mary of Snow) with the current “Dedication of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore,” emphasizing the theological significance of the building rather than the legendary narrative.

## The Triumphal Arch and 5th-Century Mosaics

The most valuable artistic element of the basilica is the 5th-century triumphal arch, which glorifies divine motherhood from the perspective of salvation history. At the center, the Lord’s throne with the “gemmed cross” is flanked by scenes depicting the Annunciation, Presentation in the Temple, Adoration of the Magi, and the cities of Bethlehem and Jerusalem, symbolizing Jesus’ earthly life’s beginning and end, as well as the birth of the Church. In both cities, Mary is present and active.

## “Salus Populi Romani” (Health of the Roman People)

The Virgin Theotokos is especially revered in this basilica with the distinctive title, “Salus Populi Romani” (“Health of the Roman People”). Her image in the Pauline Chapel (built by Pope Paul V, 1605-1621) is one of Rome’s most venerated Marian icons. Associated with this image are memories of pestilence being halted under Gregory the Great (590) and the devotion of John Paul II, who annually visited the basilica on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception to entrust the Church to the Virgin.

## Mary: Temple of God and New Jerusalem

The renewed liturgy invites deep theological reflection: the terms “dedication” and “church” applied to Mary reveal her as a virgin “dedicated exclusively to the Lord” and, simultaneously, as the image and source of Mariology. Mary is described as “the most perfect realization of the Church in one individual” (SC 103). The new Jerusalem of Revelation (21:1-5) finds its highest fulfillment in Mary: she fully adhered to God in her virginity, becoming a mother in heart and body. The material temple dedicated to Mary is an image of Mary as a living temple of the Holy Spirit.
