The Sacred Liturgy and Devotion to Mary

The Sacred Liturgy, as the public worship of the Church, represents the adoration that Christ, as Priest and Head of the Church, offers to the Eternal Father. In this act of adoration, Christ associates the Church, His Bride, with Himself. The Second Vatican Council emphasizes that “the whole public worship is exercised by the mystical body of Jesus Christ, that is, by the Head and by His members” (SC n. 7). This concept sheds light on the significant role of the Virgin Mary in the Liturgy, as the Mother of the Redeemer and the most distinguished member of the Church.
Mary in the Liturgy: A Place of Honor

The veneration of Mary in the Liturgy is a reflection of her unique association with the mysteries of Christ, the Redeemer. Historically, in both East and West, the highest and purest expressions of devotion to Mary have flourished in the liturgical context. The daily commemoration of Mary in the Eucharistic Prayer of every Mass, especially considering that the Eucharistic sacrifice is the supreme act of Christian adoration, underscores the importance of this devotion.
Mary in the Liturgical Year
The Liturgy of Advent is one of the earliest testimonies of the veneration given to the Mother of God by the Church. Devotion to Mary is inseparable from its necessary point of reference: Christ. The celebrations of Christmas, including the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and the feast of the Holy Family, are moments in which the Liturgy highlights the presence of Mary. Moreover, throughout the Liturgical Year, celebrations such as the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Assumption, and others reaffirm the special role of Mary in the life of the Church.
Mary and Intercession in the Liturgy
The Liturgy values the role of Mary’s intercession. After the example of Moses, who interceded for the people of Israel, the Church recognizes and invokes the power of Mary’s intercession in various liturgical celebrations. On the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, the Church prays through Mary’s intercession to find God in holiness and purity of spirit. Similarly, on other Marian feasts, the prayers emphasize her intercession.
The Liturgy and the Living Tradition
The Liturgy is a constitutive element of the holy and living Tradition, reflecting the belief of the Church in the powerful intercession of Mary. The liturgical formulas, rooted in the lex orandi, lex credendi, manifest the faith of the Church in the Mother of God. Thus, Marian devotion has solid foundations in the faith of the Church, teaching the faithful how to pray to and to venerate Mary.
Mary’s Role in the Various Facets of the Liturgy
Beyond the specific celebrations, the Liturgy of the Hours, the Lectionary, and other liturgical texts include references to Mary, reinforcing her importance in the life of the Church. From the baptismal rite to the prayers for the dying and for the dead, the Liturgy recognizes and invokes Mary’s role of intercession.
Mary in the Renewed Roman Liturgy
The relationship between the Liturgy and devotion to Mary is explored in depth in the document Marialis Cultus of Paul VI, which establishes the criteria for a Marian devotion that is liturgical, biblical, and ecumenical.

The Roman Liturgy, especially after the renewal under the pontificate of Saint Paul VI, properly situates the Virgin Mary within the mystery of Christ, recognizing her singular role in Christian worship. Marian devotion, strengthened by the tradition of the Church and by the liturgical movement that preceded the Second Vatican Council, offers Christians solid liturgical reasons for her veneration. This devotion leads the faithful to a deeper participation in the mysteries of Christ and ensures that a solid faith sustains the affection shown to the blessed Mother. The Liturgy, therefore, not only honors Mary, but also teaches the faithful the depth and the beauty of their devotion.
