Encounter in the Temple: Loss and Reunion with Jesus

The Encounter (Luke 2:41-52)

The Encounter in the Temple (Luke 2:41-52), also known as Reunion in the French tradition, is the only event between Jesus’ Nativity and the beginning of his public ministry. The scene of Mary and Joseph searching for Jesus for three days is one of the most intensely human passages in the Gospel.

The Episode

When Jesus was twelve years old, the Holy Family traveled to Jerusalem for the Passover feast. On their return, Mary and Joseph realized Jesus was missing. They searched for him anxiously for three days. They found him in the Temple, sitting among the teachers of the Law. Mary exclaims: “Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I were looking for you in distress.”

Jesus’ Mysterious Response

Jesus replies: “Why were you looking for me? Didn’t you know that I had to be in my Father’s house?” The Gospel adds that Mary and Joseph “did not understand.” This misunderstanding is one of the passages revealing Mary’s faith as a journey in the dark, not a full vision.

Theology of Reunion

The Fathers of the Church interpreted the three days of searching as a prefiguration of the three days between Jesus’ death and resurrection. Mary, who searched for her son for three days, is a symbol of the Church waiting for the Resurrected. The Reunion in the Temple anticipates the Easter encounter.
