Finding in the Temple: the loss and the finding of Jesus

The Finding in the Temple (Lk 2:41-52), also called Recouvrement in the French tradition, is the only episode between the Nativity and the beginning of Jesus’ public life. The scene of Mary and Joseph searching for Jesus for three days is one of the most humanly intense in the whole Gospel.

The episode

When Jesus was twelve years old, the Holy Family went up to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover. On the way back, Mary and Joseph realized that Jesus had stayed behind. For three days they searched for Him anxiously. They found Him in the Temple, sitting among the doctors of the Law. Mary says: “Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been searching for you in anguish.”

The mysterious answer of Jesus

Jesus answers: “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” The Gospel adds that Mary and Joseph “did not understand.” This lack of understanding is one of the passages that reveal Mary’s faith as a journey in darkness, not as full vision.

Theology of the reunion

The Fathers of the Church interpreted the three days of searching as a prefiguration of the three days between the death and the Resurrection. Mary, who sought her Son for three days, is a figure of the Church that awaits the Risen One. The Finding in the Temple anticipates the Easter encounter.
