Czestochowa, the Black Madonna of Poland

Częstochowa (Częstochowa) is the largest Marian shrine in Poland, situated on Mount Jasna Góra (“Bright Mountain”). The center of the devotion is the icon of the Black Madonna, an image of Mary that tradition attributes to Saint Luke and that probably dates from the ninth century. The icon of the Black Madonna

The image has a face darkened by incense and by time, from which comes the popular name “Black Madonna” or “Black Virgin”. The face of Mary has two scars on the right cheek, the result of an attack by Hussites in the fifteenth century. The scars were never corrected by the restorers, by order of the Queen.

Mary and Polish identity

In 1655, during the Swedish invasion (“the Deluge”), the monastery of Jasna Góra heroically withstood the siege. King John II Casimir consecrated Poland to Mary at Lwów (1656), proclaiming her Queen of Poland. John Paul II, a Pole, had a special devotion to Częstochowa. His episcopal motto Totus Tuus is born of this devotion.
