Introduction to Częstochowa

Częstochowa (Częstochowa) is Poland’s largest Marian sanctuary, located on Jasna Góra (“Bright Mountain”). The focus of devotion is the Black Madonna icon, an image of Mary traditionally attributed to Saint Luke and likely dating from the 9th century. For a comprehensive article: Our Lady of Częstochowa.

The Black Madonna Icon

The icon has a darkened face due to incense and the passage of time, hence the popular name “Black Madonna” or “Our Lady Black.” Mary’s right cheek bears two scars from a 15th-century Hussite attack, which were never corrected by restorers, per the command of the Queen.

Mary and Polish Identity

In 1655, during the Swedish invasion (“Deluge”), Jasna Góra Monastery heroically resisted a siege. King John II Casimir dedicated Poland to Mary in Lwów (1656), proclaiming her Queen of Poland. Polish Pope John Paul II had a special devotion to Częstochowa. His episcopal motto, Totus Tuus, arises from this devotion.
