The Star of Hope

In this world, full of dangers and afflictions, the tradition of the Church has always invoked the Virgin Mary as Star of the Sea and Star of Hope. In her company and under her protection, the threatening sea does not prevail, fear does not hold sway, and the course of the voyage is not lost. The Virgin shines upon us, guiding us through the vicissitudes of each day, whenever she is invoked with filial devotion. No storm can dim her brightness, because she always radiates the light of Christ, the light that He is and that no one can extinguish.
Mary, Star of the Sea: The Tradition of Christian Hope

In the life of the Virgin Mother, from Nazareth to the Cross and from the Cross to the glorious Assumption, the compass of hope that guided her was the fulfillment of the will of her Son, Jesus Christ, the blessed fruit of her womb. From the very first moment, He was the joy and the hope of His Mother’s life, because He is true hope (cf. 1 Tim 1:1). Christ is the star that guided the Virgin, His Mother and Disciple, who made her pilgrimage of faith, always accompanying Him and always hoping. Mary experienced, as no one else has, that hope, which is Christ Himself, does not disappoint, does not fade, does not fail, and does not deceive (cf. Rom 5:5).
Mary, Educator of Hope: Her Example of Faith
There is an urgent need to rediscover Mary’s mission as the educator of every Christian’s hope. With her “yes,” she allowed the hope of so many generations to become reality, to enter our world and our history. Therefore, on our voyage across the sea of history, the Virgin Mary never ceases to educate in hope, radiating the light of the Lamb, which will illuminate all the nations (cf. Rev 21:22).
She teaches us not to fall into discouragement and sadness. Standing by the cross of Jesus was His Mother and our Mother, anchored in her unbreakable hope. She educates in hope, in the most difficult and darkest moments, when evil seems to have an invincible force. In these moments, she bears witness that hope conquers. And when hope conquers, when hope does not give way to revolt, evil is defeated.
The Star of Hope guides the Church toward eternal life. This is undoubtedly a precious fruit of Christian hope: we believe in eternal life, we believe in life without end, we believe in heaven. Our Lady of the Assumption is Our Lady of Hope. She is the shining star that leads to heaven, because she was taken up into heaven, body and soul, and exalted by God as Queen. The Star of Hope does not tire of shining. Let us not tire of following her.

Mary as “Star of Hope” is one of the most beautiful images in the Encyclical Spe Salvi of Benedict XVI, where the Virgin appears as a luminous guide on the Church’s pilgrimage through history.
