Mary, the Star of the Sea: The Tradition of Christian Hope

In this world filled with dangers and afflictions, the tradition of the Church always invokes the Virgin Mary as a star of the sea and of hope. In her company and protection, the threatening sea does not triumph, fear does not dominate, and the course of the journey is not lost. The Virgin shines over us, guiding us through daily vicissitudes, whenever she is invoked with filial devotion. No storm can dim her light, for she eternally resplends with the light of Christ, a light that He is and no one can extinguish.

The image of Mary as the “Star of Hope” is one of the most beautiful found in the Encyclical *Spe Salvi* (On Salvation) by Benedict XVI, where the Virgin appears as a luminous guide in the pilgrimage of the Church throughout history.

The Compass of Hope in Mary’s Life

In the life of the Virgin Mother, from Nazareth to the Cross and from the Cross to the glorious Assumption, the compass of hope that guided her was the fulfillment of the will of her Son, Jesus Christ, blessed fruit of her womb. He, from the beginning, was the joy and hope of his Mother’s life, for true hope is He (1 Tim 1,1). Christ is the star that guided Mary, his Mother and Disciple, who walked in faith, always following Him and always hoping. Mary experienced, like no one else, that hope, which is Christ Himself, does not disappoint, does not disappear, does not fail, and does not deceive (Rom 5,5).

Mary, Educator of Hope

It is urgent to rediscover the mission of Mary as an educator of hope for every Christian. She, with her “yes,” allowed the hope of generations to become a reality, entering our world and our history. Thus, in our journey through history, the Virgin Mary continues to educate us for hope, resplending the light of the Lamb, who will illuminate all nations (Rev 21,22).We are encouraged by Her not to succumb to discouragement and sadness. At the foot of Jesus’ cross stood His Mother, anchored in her unbreakable hope. Mary educates us for hope in the most difficult and dark moments, where evil seems invincible. In these moments, She testifies that hope wins. And when hope prevails, when it does not yield to rebellion, evil is defeated.

The Star of Hope and Eternal Life

The “Star of Hope” guides the Church toward eternal life, a precious fruit of Christian hope: we believe in life without end, in eternal life, in heaven. Our Lady of the Assumption is the Lady of Hope. She is the bright star that leads to heaven, for she was raised to heaven in body and soul, exalted by God as Queen. The Star of Hope never tires of shining.
