Marian Popular Religiosity, the Faith of the People and Inculturation

Marian popular religiosity designates the whole body of devotional practices that peoples have developed over the centuries around Mary: patronal feasts, processions, pilgrimages, ex-votos, popular hymns, representations in the visual arts, legends, and traditions. It is an authentic expression of the faith of the People of God.

Theological Value

The Aparecida Document (CELAM, 2007) recognizes in popular religiosity a “theological locus”, a form of knowledge of the faith that complements academic theology. John Paul II spoke of popular religiosity as “the evangelization of the poor”: the simple gained access to the Gospel through Marian devotions, feasts, and pilgrimages.

Inculturation and Diversity

Popular Marian religiosity takes very diverse forms according to the cultures: the Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexico, Our Lady of Aparecida in Brazil, the August Feasts in Portugal and Italy, the Romerías in Spain. Each cultural expression is an inculturation of the same mystery of Mary.

Purification and Authenticity

Paul VI, in Marialis Cultus (1974), calls for popular Marian devotion to be purified, not eliminated. Purification entails setting aside superstitions, exaggerations, magical elements, or Christological imbalances, always keeping devotion to Mary in its correct place: ordered to Christ, rooted in the faith of the Church.
