Cześćochowa: The Black Madonna of Poland

Czestochowa: a Senhora negra da Polónia

# Częstochowa, the Black Virgin of Poland

## Introduction

**Częstochowa** (Częstochowa) is Poland’s largest Marian sanctuary, located on Jasna Góra (“Bright Mountain”). The focal point of devotion is the icon of the Black Madonna, an image of Mary traditionally attributed to Saint Luke and likely dating from the 9th century. ## The Icon of the Black Madonna

The image has a darkened face due to incense and age, hence its popular name “Black Madonna” or “Lady Black.” Mary’s right cheek bears two scars from a 15th-century attack by Hussites, which were never corrected by restorers, per the command of the [Queen](https://locusmariologicus.org/regina-dicionario/).

## Mary and Polish Identity

In 1655, during the Swedish invasion (“Deluge”), Jasna Góra monastery bravely withstood a siege. King John II Casimir dedicated Poland to Mary in Lwów (1656), proclaiming her Queen of Poland. Pope John Paul II, a Pole, had a special devotion to Częstochowa. His episcopal motto *Totus Tuus* (All Yours) stems from this devotion.
