The Holy Land

The Holy Land is the territory where Mary lived, prayed, and accompanied her Son throughout His earthly life. Visiting these places offers a privileged form of Marian meditation. The main sites associated with Mary in the Holy Land correspond to significant moments from her life documented in the Gospels.

Nazareth: The House of the Announcement

Located in Nazareth, the Basilica of the Annunciation stands over the cave believed to be Mary’s home. It is the largest Marian shrine in the Holy Land and one of the most visited worldwide. The basilica was built by the Franciscans between 1960 and 1969 on the ruins of earlier churches dating back to the Crusader period.

Ain Carim: The Visitation

In Ain Carim, southwest of Jerusalem, the Church of the Visitation marks the spot where Mary visited Elizabeth. The frieze depicting the Magnificat in dozens of languages is one of the most moving features of this sanctuary. The Church of Saint John the Baptist indicates the birthplace of John the Baptist.

Bethlehem and Jerusalem

In Bethlehem, the Basilica of the Nativity is the place of Jesus’ birth. On Mount Zion in Jerusalem, an ancient tradition locates Mary’s “Dormition,” the place where she fell asleep in the Lord.
