John Paul II – Marian Catecheses (1995-1997): The Largest Marian Cycle of Contemporary Magisterium.

Between September 1995 and November 1997, Saint John Paul II dedicated seventy consecutive weekly catecheses (General Audiences on Wednesdays) to the theme of Mary. It is the most systematic and developed Marian cycle of contemporary papal magisterium: an authentic Mariological, biblical, patristic, and theological synthesis, organized into five major sections.

**Table:**

| **Pope** | Saint John Paul II |
|—|—|
| **Period** | 6 September 1995 to 12 November 1997 |
| **Number of Catecheses** | 70 general audiences on Mary |
| **Collection** | Published in 1998 under the title “Mary: Marian Catechesis of Pope Saint John Paul II” |

**Structure of the Cycle, Five Major Sections:**

**1. Mary in God’s Designs (Catecheses 1-13)**
The cycle begins with biblical and dogmatic foundational elements. Mary in God’s eternal plans, her place in the Trinity, divine motherhood as an eternal predestination. These initial catecheses lay the theological groundwork for the rest of the cycle.

**2. Mary in the Old Testament (Catecheses 14-22)**
Mary’s typology in the OT: Eve, women of Israel, Daughter of Zion, Messianic prophecies (Isaiah 7:14, Micah 5:2). John Paul II reads the OT through the lens of Vatican II, avoiding both reducing Mary to a legendary figure and escaping the prophecies.

**3. Mary in the New Testament (Catecheses 23-43)**
This is the longest section: Mary at the Announcement, Visitation, Presentation in the Temple, Cana, at the Cross, in the Cenacle. Each Gospel scene receives a dedicated catechesis with exegetical analysis.

**4. Mary in Marian Dogmas (Catecheses 44-58)**
Immaculate Conception, perpetual virginity, divine motherhood, Assumption—each dogma developed in its biblical, patristic, speculative, and existential dimensions.

**5. Mary in the Life of the Church (Catecheses 59-70)**
Worship, popular piety, prayer, ecumenism, mission, the future of the Church in Marian perspective. The cycle concludes with Mary as Mother of the Church on its pilgrimage.

**Catecheses Particularly Significant:**

**“The Woman Clothed with the Sun” (15 May 1996)**
John Paul II reads Revelation 12 as an icon of the primitive Church and a prophetic anticipation of eschatology. The Woman in Revelation is simultaneously Mary and the Church, a traditional patristic interpretation confirmed.

**“Mary, New Eve” (24 July 1996)**
Re-articulating Justin Martyr and Irenaeus of Lyon, the Pope presents the parallel between Eve and Mary as key to Marian soteriology. This catechesis is cited in all recent standard Mariology manuals.

**“The Body Assumed of Mary” (2 July 1997)**
A synthesis of Pius XII’s definition (1950, see Munificentissimus Deus) with new developments: the Assumption as an anticipation of humanity’s glorious destiny.

**“Mary, Model of Ecumenism” (3 September 1997)**
Mary as a bridge to unity with Eastern Churches (Theotokos common), Protestant churches (biblical reading), and the whole human family.

## Meaning for Mariology

The catechesis cycle from 1995-1997 is one of two major mariological syntheses during the pontificate of John Paul II, the other being the encyclical *Redemptoris Mater* (1987). While the encyclical presents a systematic Marian theology, the catechesis offers a *pastoral approach*, a narrative and biblical Mariology accessible to the average believer.
