Guardian angels – devotion and Catholic Magisterium

## Doctrine on Guardian Angels

The doctrine that every faithful person has a personal guardian angel assigned by God from birth is one of the most comforting truths of Catholic faith. Confirmed by Sacred Scripture, Tradition, and Magisterium, devotion to Guardian Angels permeates the history of the Church with particular intensity.

### Scriptural Foundation

**Old Testament:**

– Psalm 91:11-12: *”He will order his angels to protect you in all your ways. They will bear you up on their hands, lest you strike your foot against a stone.”*
– Psalm 34:7: *”The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.”*
– Exodus 23:20: *”Behold, I send my angel before you, to guard you on your way and bring you to the place which I have prepared.”*

**New Testament:**

– Matthew 18:10: *”Do not despise one of these little ones, for their angels in heaven constantly see my Father’s face.”*
– Acts 12:15: The faithful exclaim about Saint Peter’s release from prison: *”He is the angel!”*
– Hebrews 1:14: *”Are they not all ministering spirits, sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?”*
– Luke 16:22: Lazarus is taken “by the angels to Abraham’s bosom.”

### Patristic Tradition

**St. Basil the Great (4th century):**

> “Each faithful person has an angel by his side as a protector and shepherd to lead him to life” (Adversus Eunomium 3, 1: PG 29, 656B). This citation will be later incorporated into the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) § 336.

**Origen (3rd century):**

In *Contra Celsum*, Origen develops the doctrine of “national angels,” each nation having a protector angel, and “personal angels,” every individual having their own.

**St. John Chrysostom:**

“Each faithful Christian has an angel. Even the weakest, the poorest, the most ignorant, has his own angel.” (Homily on Matthew 59)

**St. Jerome:**

“Great honor is due to human nature, from birth each one has a personal angel assigned to protect them” (Commentary on Matthew).

### Magisterial Teachings

**Roman Catechism (1566):**

See [post on the Roman Catechism](https://example.com/catecismo-romano-1566-anjos-demonios/): *”Each faithful person has a Guardian Angel assigned by God from birth. The Angel protects the Christian against the wiles of Satan.”*

**Pope Paul V (1608):**

Extends the celebration of Guardian Angels to the universal Church, fixing it on October 2nd.

**Pope Clement X (1670):**

Elevates the feast of Guardian Angels to a minor feast.

**Pope Leo XIII (1899):**

In his encyclical *Annum Sacrum*, recalls the role of Guardian Angels in the spiritual life of the faithful.

## Pope Pius XII (5 October 1958)

**Speech on the **”Year of the Guardian Angels”**, emphasizes the concrete action of the Guardian Angel in four roles: protector against evil, spiritual guide, counselor in difficulties, and conductor to God at the hour of death.

## Pope John Paul II (Catechesis 30 July 1986)

**See post on the Catecheses:** *”The presence of the Guardian Angel… is for each Christian the tangible guarantee of God’s love for each one of us.”*

## Pope Benedict XVI (Angelus 27 September 2009)

> **”The Church celebrates next Thursday the liturgical memory of the Saints Guardians Angels, often invoked in this period. These celestial spirits that God has placed in charge of each man… are messengers of the providential love of the Father. The Guardian Angels are always faithfully close to us, guiding us along the path of salvation. On the other hand, they are also ready to defend us from insidious and dangers awaiting us on the way.”**

## Pope Francis (Christus Vivit n. 47, 2019)

In **Christus Vivit**, Francis refers to the Guardian Angel of young people: *”Young people feel accompanied, even when they feel alone. Parents… Grandparents… and also their Guardian Angels, these invisible friends sent by God.”*

## Roles of the Guardian Angel

According to traditional theology, the Guardian Angel has four main roles:

* **Custody:** Protect against physical and spiritual dangers
* **Illumination:** Suggest good thoughts and good counsel
* **Inspiration:** Move towards good and virtue
* **Presentation:** Offer our prayers and good works to God, guide the soul at the hour of death

## The Prayer “Angel of God”

The traditional prayer to the Guardian Angel, recited by Catholics worldwide:

### Latin Text

> *Angele Dei, qui custos es mei,
> me tibi commissum pietate superna,
> hodie illumina, custodi, rege et guberna.
> Amen.*

### Portuguese Translation

> *Santo Anjo do Senhor, meu zeloso guardador,
> já que a ti me confiou a piedade divina,
> sempre me rege, me guarde, me governe e me ilumine.
> Amen.*

This prayer has a plenary indulgence under usual conditions (confession, communion, prayer for the Pope’s intentions) on the feast of the Guardian Angels (2 October), according to the *Enchiridion Indulgentiarum* (1968 and 2004).
