Our Lady of Fatima: The Message from the Immaculate Heart

Nossa Senhora de Fátima: a mensagem do coração imaculado
# Our Lady of Fátima: The Message from the Immaculate Heart## Introduction to Our Lady of FátimaOur Lady of Fátima is one of the most significant Marian apparitions of the 20th century and a major religious phenomenon in contemporary Church history. Between May and October 1917, Mary appeared six times to three shepherd children—Lúcia dos Santos (age 10), Francisco Marto (age 9), and Jacinta Marto (age 7)—in the Iria Valley, Fátima, Portugal. She left a message of prayer, penance, and devotion to her Immaculate Heart. For a comprehensive article: [Our Lady of Fátima](/).## The Visionaries and AppearancesThe three visionaries were children from Aljustrel, a village near Fátima, whose families were shepherds. In 1916, an angel appeared to them three times to prepare them. The six apparitions of Our Lady took place on the 13th of each month from May to October 1917 in the Iria Valley. At each appearance, Mary presented herself in a white dress with a golden-edged cloak, holding a rosary, and requested that they return for six consecutive months. She promised to take Francisco and Jacinta with her briefly (both died in 1919-1920 during the influenza epidemic). Lúcia lived until 2005, becoming a Carmelite nun.## The Message and SecretThe core of the Fátima message is an appeal for prayer, penance, and reparation. Our Lady requested, especially, the daily recitation of the Rosary and devotion to her Immaculate Heart. During the third appearance (July 13, 1917), she entrusted the visionaries with a three-part secret: a glimpse into hell, where sinners’ souls go; a prediction of a second world war if the world does not convert; and a request for the consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart. The secret contained a third part that remained in the Vatican Archives until 2000, when Pope John Paul II ordered its publication. The message emphasizes final triumph: *”In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph.”*## The Miracle of the SunOn October 13, 1917, the day of the final appearance, over fifty thousand people gathered in the Iria Valley, drawn by reports that the Virgin would perform a miracle for all to believe. Known as the *Miracle of the Sun*, this event involved a rapid movement of the sun, which displayed all the colors of the rainbow and appeared to fall towards the earth, observed by the entire crowd, both believers and non-believers. Several Lisbon newspapers documented the occurrence as an undeniable fact. It is one of the best-documented miracles in the history of Marian apparitions.## World Approval and DiffusionThe message from Our Lady of Fátima has gained worldwide approval and diffusion. The Bishop of Leiria declared the apparitions worthy of faith in 1930 and authorized public veneration. Pius XII consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1942 and referred to himself as “the Pope of Fátima.” Paul VI pilgrimaged to Fátima in 1967, on the fiftieth anniversary of the apparitions. John Paul II, who survived an assassination attempt on May 13, 1981, visited Fátima in 1982 to thank the Virgin for her protection and beatified Francisco and Jacinta in 2000. Fátima has become one of the world’s largest Marian shrines, receiving millions of pilgrims annually.**Theological Significance:**Fátima is a charismatic phenomenon that the Second Vatican Council situates within the distribution of charisms by the Holy Spirit for the building up of the Church (LG 12). Its message does not add anything to public revelation but rather represents the essence of the Gospel with prophetic urgency: conversion, prayer, and trust in God’s mercy manifested through Mary’s Heart. The theologian S. De Fiores emphasized that the greatest risk in interpreting Fátima is absolutizing it, as if it were the sole pastoral focus of the Church, or isolating its apocalyptic elements. The central theme is Mary’s maternal love that calls children to faith and hope.**Deepen Your Studies:** Explore Mariology, Marian Apparitions, the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and a Postgraduate Degree in Mariology.—**Church Magisterium:**> *”Fatimense nuntium magnum momentum habet: Deus per Mariam advocat homines ad poenitentiam et ad precationem, signanter ad recitationem Rosarii.”* > – St. John Paul II, Homily in Fátima (May 13, 1982)**Translation:** The message of Fátima holds great importance: God, through Mary, calls people to penance and prayer, especially the recitation of the Rosary.> *”In fine, Cor meum Immaculatum triumphabit.”* > – Blessed Virgin Mary to Lucy of Fátima (July 13, 1917), from authentic documents
