# Three Major Documents of Pope Francis Conclude His Marian PerspectiveThree monumental documents from Pope Francis—*Christus Vivit* (2019) on youth, *Patris Corde* (2020) on Saint Joseph, and *Fratelli Tutti* (2020) on universal fraternity—form the comprehensive view of Mary within his pontificate. In each document, Mary plays a distinct role related to its central theme.## Pope: Francis## Documents:
– *Christus Vivit* (2019, nn. 43-48, 298)
– *Patris Corde* (2020, Conclusion)
– *Fratelli Tutti* (2020, Conclusion)## Themes:
– Mary and youth
– Mary and Saint Joseph
– Mary and universal fraternity## Christus Vivit nn. 43-48, Mary, the Influencer of GodThe Exhortation *Christus Vivit* contains one of the most original pastoral applications of the figure of Mary: Mary as a model for Christian youth. Numbers 43-48 are dedicated to Mary as a “**young Christian**” and as an **”influencer”** of God:> “*Maria erat juvenis.
>
> (Mary was young. Her heart palpitated close to love, like all the young, but her spirituality was helped by an ungraspable grace, with which she knew how to call God with all her soul. Yet, what first shows us Mary as a young person is not herself, but herself for others: «My soul magnifies the Lord»! For this reason Mary was in a certain sense the first and greatest “**influencer**” of God: a young woman who did not know to show others except Christ.)## Mary and Digital Culture of YouthPope Francis uses the term “**influencer**” (in English in the original Italian text) deliberately to bring Mary close to the digital culture of youth. In a world where adolescents follow influencers on social media, Francis proposes Mary as the first and greatest influencer in history, one who does not promote herself but promotes Christ.## Christus Vivit n. 298, Prayer to Mary for YouthThe final prayer for youth invites Mary’s motherhood over contemporary Christian youth:> “*Maria iuvenum, ora pro nobis, sis advocata juvenum apud Filium tuum, ut, sicut tu in iuventute respondisti «fiat», ita iidem juvenes nostri possint cum cor leto respondere «sicut» Domino vocanti.*”
>
> (Mary of the youth, pray for us, be advocate for the youth before your Son, so that, as you responded in youth “let it be,” so too our young people may joyfully respond “yes” to the Lord who calls.)## Patris Corde (8 December 2020), Mary and Saint JosephThe Apostolic Letter *Patris Corde*, published on the feast of the Immaculate Conception in 2020, marking the 150th anniversary of Saint Joseph’s designation as Patron of the Universal Church (Pio IX, 1870), includes a final section on Mary and Joseph as a couple:
“Joseph is the ‘just man’ (Mt 1:19), who ‘took Mary as his wife’ (Mt 1:24) and who appeared by Mary’s side in domestic life like a guardian angel. Mary and Joseph spoke together in the language of heavenly love, through silence, concealment, and mutual support. Joseph is the first example of a husband who loves his wife differently from others, for he loved her as Christ loved the Church.”
In the encyclical Fratelli Tutti, on fraternity and social friendship, there is a Marian section where Mary is presented as the Mother of universal brotherhood:
“Mary gave Jesus to the world, and through Jesus, made every man brother to all men. At the Cross, Jesus gave Mary to John, and to all the apostles and all the faithful, as their Mother. Thus Mary became a mother not only of Christ but of all humanity united in brotherhood. In this time of separation and war, Mary stands as a visible sign of universal fraternity.”
Conclusion: Francis’ pastoral mariology
Pope Francis’ mariology is primarily pastoral and existential: Mary is presented as a close mother, present in the sensitive points of contemporary life—youth, family, consecrated life, ecology, brotherhood. This pastoral closeness does not diminish the depth of dogma but rather makes it accessible.
