Jasna Góra, the luminous mountain

Jasna Góra (“Luminous Mountain” in Polish) is the most important Marian shrine in Poland and one of the greatest pilgrimage centers in the Christian world, located in Częstochowa, in Silesia. The Monastery of the Pauline Fathers has existed since 1382 and houses the icon that became the spiritual heart of the Polish nation: the Czarna Madonna, the Black Madonna. The shrine receives between three and five million pilgrims each year, including the historic walking pilgrimage from Warsaw that covers 250 km in nine days.

The Black Madonna, the icon and the scars

The icon of the Black Madonna is a painting on oak wood of the Hodegetria type: Mary points to the Child as the way. The dark coloring results from the oxidation of the bitumen and from centuries of candles. The icon has two visible scars on Mary’s face, resulting from a Hussite attack in 1430: when they tried to break the image, the assailants stopped, and the icon was restored, but the scars were intentionally kept as a memory of the violation and of the supernatural character of the icon. This decision turned the marks of violence into a sign of hope: Mary, wounded, remains present.

John Paul II and the Totus Tuus

The relationship between Jasna Góra and John Paul II is central to understanding contemporary Mariology. Karol Wojtyła lived his devotion to the Madonna of Częstochowa from childhood and, as pope, visited the shrine on all his journeys to Poland. It was here that he pronounced his life motto: Totus Tuus (“All Yours”), taken from Saint Louis de Montfort. The encyclical Redemptoris Mater (1987) is the mature theological expression of this devotion: a meditation on Mary as “Mother on the journey of faith” that John Paul II lived in profound connection with Jasna Góra.
