Mary and the Most Holy Trinity: the daughter, the mother, and the spouse
The relationship of Mary with the Most Holy Trinity is the foundation of all Mariology: Mary stands in a unique and singular relationship with each of the three divine Persons. For the full article: Mary and the Most Holy Trinity.
Daughter of the Father
Mary is a creature of the Father, the most perfect of creatures, the one who most fully realized God’s creative plan. The Immaculate Conception is the gift of the Father: a creature preserved from original sin so as to be a worthy dwelling for the Son. Saint Francis of Assisi called Mary “the Virgin made Church.”
Mother of the Son
Mary’s relationship with the Son is the most direct and, in human terms, the closest: it is the relationship of mother and son. Theotokos, Mother of God, is the title that the Council of Ephesus (431) defined as the foundation of all Mariology. Whoever denies that Mary is the Mother of God denies that Jesus is true God.
Spouse of the Holy Spirit
Mary’s relationship with the Holy Spirit is expressed in the tradition by the title “Spouse”: the Holy Spirit came down upon her at the Annunciation, bringing about the Incarnation. Saint Maximilian Kolbe (Kolbe) developed this theology of “the Immaculata as Spouse of the Holy Spirit” in a particularly profound way.

Magisterium of the Church
Beata Virgo Maria a Deo Patre ab aeterno electa est, ut Spiritu Sancto obumbrante Filium conciperet, atque ita in mysteriis Trinitatis specialissime intersit.
Second Vatican Council, Dogmatic Const. Lumen Gentium, no. 56
📚 Literal translation: The Blessed Virgin Mary was chosen by God the Father from eternity so that, overshadowed by the Holy Spirit, she might conceive the Son, and thus share in a most special way in the mysteries of the Trinity.
