Vocations and Marian devotion: Mary in states of life
Marian Devotion is not exclusive to a particular state of life; it illuminates and enriches the vocation of every baptized person. Mary serves as a universal model because she lived, in a perfect way, the response to God’s call, whether as a virgin, wife, or mother.
Mary and Consecrated Life
Numerous religious families have Mary as their patroness or foundational model: the Servants of Mary, Carmelites, Dominicans, Salesians. The practice of consecration to Mary has been central in the spirituality of many congregations, based on the theology of St. Louis Maria de Montfort.
Mary and Marriage
Mary and Joseph form the Holy Family, a model for every Christian family. The Church’s Magisterium, particularly John Paul II in Familiaris Consortio, presents Nazareth as “the first domestic sanctuary.” The Christian family is called to be an ecclesia domestica, where Mary is mother and educator in faith.
Mary and the Priesthood
The relationship between priests and Mary is highlighted by numerous papal documents. John Paul II, in his 1979 Letter to Priests, entrusted all priests to Mary’s protection. The mother who offered her Son to the Father is a model for the priest who offers the Eucharist.
