The Church and Mary: The Mother and the Body of Christ

Igreja e Maria: a mãe e o corpo de Cristo

The Church and Mary, the Mother and the Body of Christ

The relationship between the Church and Mary is one of the central themes of post-conciliar Marian Theology. Vatican II placed Mary in chapter VIII of Lumen Gentium (on the Church), underlining that Mary is a “preeminent member” and a “type” of the Church. For a complete article: Mary, Mother of the Church.

Mary as Type of the Church

Mary is the type (model, figure) of the Church in three senses: (1) virgin: the Church receives the Word with pure faith, as Mary received the Angel. (2) mother: the Church brings forth children for God, as Mary brought forth the Son of God. (3) bride: the Church lives in a covenant of love with Christ, as Mary lived in total dedication to her Son.

Mother of the Church

At the close of Vatican II (November 21, 1964), Pope Paul VI proclaimed Mary “Mother of the Church.” This title, not present in the conciliar text (it was added by the Pope), sums up Mary’s maternal relationship with all the members of the Body of Christ. Francis confirmed the title in the liturgical feast of “Mary, Mother of the Church,” celebrated on the Monday after Pentecost.
